JPC Meeting On Waqf Board Amendment Bill: In the meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2024, Uttarakhand Waqf Board has supported the Amendment Bill, 2024. On Monday (October 28), several state Waqf boards including Punjab Waqf Board, Haryana Waqf Board and Uttarakhand Waqf Board gave their views and suggestions to the JPC.
According to sources, representatives of Uttarakhand Waqf Board made a unique request during their presentation before the committee. He said that when a soldier fights for the country, he does not fight as a Hindu, Muslim or any other religion, but as a patriot. Therefore a legal provision should be made to allocate some benefits from Waqf properties to the soldiers or their families.
Uttarakhand Waqf Board said, “Except Dargah, Mosque and graveyard, the rest of the Waqf Board land given on lease should be given to the families of the soldiers. Soldiers die for our country, they do not belong to any religion or caste, they Everyone belongs to us, it is our responsibility to take care of their families.”
Opposition MPs opposed this proposal
This proposal faced opposition from many MPs from opposition parties. Opposition MPs expressed concern and said that there is no such provision in Hindu or other religious contexts. In response, the Uttarakhand Waqf Board suggested that instead of drawing parallels with other religions, they could introduce a new standard.
‘Provision for CBI investigation should be included’
During its presentation, the Board strongly supported the bill, particularly highlighting its focus on transparency and inclusion of women. The Uttarakhand Waqf Board has also recommended that provisions for CBI investigation, where necessary, be included in respect of disputed properties.
